BCLC’s Human Connection Project: Bringing People Together with Kindness and Care

The Human Connection Project is a special project from BC Lottery Corporation, also called BCLC. BCLC is not just about gambling. It is a Crown agency that is owned by the people of British Columbia. This means it belongs to taxpayers and families across B.C., not just the government.

Because BCLC belongs to the people, it works to help communities be healthy, kind, and connected. Its goal is to make sure everyone feels included and supported.

What Is a Crown Agency?

A Crown agency is an organization that is owned by the public. That means all Crown agencies belong to the people of B.C. BCLC is one of them.

The money BCLC makes goes back to help the province. It helps pay for things like health care, schools, and community programs. That is why BCLC also cares about people’s well-being, not just business. The Human Connection Project is one way BCLC shows that it cares about people and communities.

What Is Human Connection?

Human connection means feeling welcome, included, and like you belong. It is about talking with others, making friends, and spending time together. Everyone needs human connection.

Connection helps people:

  • Feel happy

  • Feel less lonely

  • Feel cared about

  • Feel safe in their communities

BCLC believes social health is important. Social health means having good friendships, feeling included, and being part of a caring community.

Who Does This Help?

The Human Connection Project helps everyone.

It is especially helpful for people who sometimes face challenges or feel left out, such as:

  • People with disabilities

  • LGBTQ+ people

  • Indigenous peoples

  • People from different cultures and backgrounds

  • People who feel lonely or isolated

When people feel included, communities become stronger, safer, and kinder. BCLC believes that everyone deserves to feel they belong.

Supporting Disability Programs

BCLC also supports programs for people with disabilities. This includes:

  • Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Benefits in B.C.

    • This program helps people with permanent disabilities get money to pay for things they need, like housing, food, and daily care.

  • Community Living B.C. (CLBC)

    • This program helps people with developmental disabilities live more independently. It provides support for housing, work, day programs, and ways to connect with their community.

BCLC’s support helps make sure people with disabilities can access the help they need, feel included, and participate fully in life.

Supporting Health and Mental Health

BCLC helps improve health care and mental health services in British Columbia. Some of the ways BCLC helps include:

  • Supporting hospitals and nurses

  • Helping doctors by funding programs and resources

  • Supporting mental health programs and services

This support helps people get the care they need, makes hospitals and clinics stronger, and helps patients feel safe and cared for. It also helps doctors and nurses do their work more effectively.

Free Events Bring People Together

BCLC also supports free community events where people can gather and enjoy time together.

One example is Music in the Park in Kamloops. These events are supported with partners like the City of Kamloops.

At Music in the Park and other free events:

  • People can enjoy live music

  • Families can spend time together

  • Friends can meet and have fun

  • Everyone is welcome

Free events like this are important because they give everyone a chance to participate. People with disabilities, seniors, families with low incomes, and young people all get to join in. These events help people feel included and happy.

Kindness and Compassion

BCLC believes in kindness and compassion.

  • Kindness means being friendly, caring, and helpful.

  • Compassion means understanding how others feel and supporting them.

The Human Connection Project helps people treat each other with respect. It encourages communities to be welcoming and safe. This helps reduce loneliness and creates a feeling of care and belonging for everyone.

Working Together With Communities

BCLC works with community groups such as GenWell and United Way British Columbia. These organizations help teach communities how to build strong connections and support social health.

Working together with community helpers helps more people feel welcome. It also helps create events and spaces where people can connect, make friends, and share experiences.

Why This Matters

Because all Crown agencies belong to the taxpayers and people of B.C., initiatives like the Human Connection Project are very important. They show that publicly owned agencies can do more than their usual work. They can improve social health, support inclusion, help people with disabilities, and fund important health services.

BCLC’s Human Connection Project is not just about games or revenue. It is about people, friendships, and strong communities. By investing in social health, BCLC helps communities become happier, safer, and more connected.

Our Thanks to BCLC

We want to say thank you to BCLC.

Thank you for:

  • Helping people connect with each other

  • Supporting disability programs like PWD Benefits and Community Living B.C.

  • Supporting health care, mental health services, doctors, and nurses

  • Supporting free events like Music in the Park

  • Believing in kindness and compassion

  • Caring about social health for everyone

BCLC is a Crown agency owned by the people of British Columbia. By supporting human connection, disability programs, and health services, BCLC is helping build a province where everyone feels included, cared for, and valued.

This is a great example of how a public organization can use its resources to make life better for all people in the community. By helping people feel welcome and connected, BCLC is making British Columbia a kinder and healthier place for everyone.
