Aging With a Disability: Mission Statement & Introduction

Mission Statement

The Aging With a Disability section on KSANews.ca is dedicated to providing education, awareness, and helpful information for people with developmental disabilities, their families, caregivers, and support professionals. Our mission is to promote inclusion, dignity, independence, and long-term wellbeing. Through articles, expert insights, multimedia resources, and community stories, we aim to help people understand aging-related changes and plan for the future with confidence.

Why Aging Supports Matter

People with developmental disabilities are living longer than ever. With institutions closed in BC and across Canada, individuals now live in community settings and are reaching older adulthood in ways previous generations never experienced. As many parents and caregivers age, questions about long-term planning, housing, health care, and independence become more important.

Aging brings unique challenges for people with developmental disabilities, including changes in physical and mental health, navigating seniors’ services, and finding the right supports at the right time. Many systems were not originally designed with this population in mind, which is why awareness and education are essential. Our goal is to provide clear, accessible information that helps individuals and families prepare, feel supported, and understand their options.

Aging Wisely: Podcasts, Videos & Professional Insights

To make learning easier and more accessible, the new section will feature the Aging Wisely Podcast, which includes conversations with health experts, caregivers, disability advocates, and older adults. Episodes focus on healthy aging, caregiving, community living, mental health, and preparing for the future.

We will also include videos from professionals specializing in aging, developmental disabilities, home care, person-centered planning, and mental health. These multimedia resources help explain complex topics in friendly, easy-to-understand ways.

Podcasts and videos ensure that everyone—readers, caregivers, and people with disabilities—can learn at their own pace and stay informed.
