Shining a Light on Disability Media Around the World

Why the Kamloops Self Advocate Newsletter and KSANews.ca Support a Global Disability Media Sector

The disability community is vast, diverse, and full of powerful stories that deserve to be heard. In recent years, more disability-led media projects have emerged across the world, giving people with disabilities a voice in shaping the stories that impact their lives. The Kamloops Self Advocate Newsletter and KSANews.ca are proud to be part of this growing movement. Together, these platforms form part of what many call the disability media sector—a unique and important part of the broader disability field.

Unlike general news outlets, disability media is created by people with disabilities, for people with disabilities. It focuses on lived experiences, inclusion, accessibility, community leadership, and positive representation. The Kamloops Self Advocate Newsletter and KSANews.ca want to help bring more attention to other disability media sources around the world because we all share the same mission: to amplify diverse voices, reduce stigma, and promote understanding.

Disability media projects differ from disability social services because they are not agencies providing clinical programs, housing coordination, or case management. Instead, our work is about storytelling, advocacy, education, and representation. Both sectors belong to the broader disability field, but we play different roles. Social service organizations support people’s daily needs, while disability media supports people’s right to be seen, heard, respected, and included.

By shining a light on disability media beyond Canada, we help create stronger global connections. Around the world, disability publications, podcasts, radio shows, social platforms, and community newsletters share stories about disability pride, accessibility victories, creative projects, employment success, sports achievements, and important conversations about mental health. These international voices help remind us that we are part of a global movement for equality and inclusion.

The Kamloops Self Advocate Newsletter has always believed in uplifting others. Over the past eleven years, it has grown into a trusted disability-led publication celebrating success stories, mental health awareness, inclusive entertainment, accessible travel, community events, and diverse disability leadership. KSANews.ca expands on this mission with a resource hub offering mental health information, crisis support, food allergy awareness, professional advice, disability representation, and wellness education. Together, they show what disability media can offer—not just news, but hope, empowerment, and connection.

Now, we want to take that commitment even further by highlighting other disability-run media projects worldwide. When we support each other, we make the entire disability media sector stronger. Sharing stories across borders helps everyone feel less alone and shows young readers that people with disabilities can be journalists, editors, creators, publishers, and leaders in the media world.

By promoting global disability media, we help encourage collaboration, respect, and shared learning. Different countries all bring their own culture, history, and lived experiences, and that makes our collective voice richer. Whether it’s a disability magazine from Australia, a podcast from the United States, a radio program from the U.K., or a community newspaper from another Canadian province, each one adds something valuable to the conversation.

The Kamloops Self Advocate Newsletter and KSANews.ca believe in the power of working together. We want to celebrate disability-led media everywhere and inspire others to join this meaningful field. Media is a tool for changing attitudes, fighting stigma, and building a more inclusive world—one story at a time.

By bringing attention to disability media around the globe, we hope to create a stronger, more connected future for everyone in the disability community.
