Welcome

Remembering Florence Girard

Florence Girard was a kind and loving person with Down syndrome and developmental disabilities. She was full of life and brought joy to many people. This page is a special place to remember her and share her story.

Florence’s life was very important, but sadly, she did not get the care and support she needed. She passed away because of malnutrition and neglect from her home share provider. This should never happen to anyone. Everyone deserves kindness, respect, and proper care. We must learn from her story and make sure people with disabilities are treated with love, support, and dignity.

A person with short black hair and a joyful expression is wearing a dark-colored top. They are sitting or standing in front of a person in a pink outfit, with part of another person visible on the left.

On this page, you can watch videos of Florence and remember her for the wonderful person she was. We want to honor her by making the world a better place for people with disabilities.

Starting in March 2025, the Kamloops Self Advocate Newsletter will share tips every month for service providers, home share providers, and other professionals. These tips will help them give better care to people with disabilities. We want to help create a world where everyone feels safe, valued, and respected.

Here are some important things we can all do:

  • Be kind and show respect to people with disabilities.
  • Have compassion and care about the people you support.
  • Learn about different challenges and needs so you can help in the best way.
  • Make sure every person gets the care they deserve.
  • Use person-centered planning to focus on each person’s unique needs.

Florence’s story is a reminder that we all have a role in making the world safer and more inclusive. Let’s remember her by treating others with kindness, standing up for those in need, and making sure no one is ever neglected.

Please check our newsletter each month to learn more about how we can support people with disabilities and ensure they receive proper care. Together, we can make a difference.
